Football

Be it on the pitch, in the stadium or in front of some screen or another: the beautiful game is a great passion of mine. Since I was about seven years old I have played in various different amateur teams in Switzerland, Germany and China. No doubt, the highlight of this time was winning the city league trophy with the team of the German School Shanghai in 2015. But I am also an avid "groundhopper", collecting stadiums as I follow my favourite club around Germany and more recently even through Europe. It is difficult to accommodate given the my busy schedule nowadays, but I still try to make it work every once in a while.

Cycling

Throughout the last couple of years I have gradually fallen in love with cycling. Besides the usual day-long tours I enjoy long-distance journeys in the saddle. So far, I have completed two major tours: from London to Freiburg in 2018 and from my home village in the Black Forest all the way to the North Cape, the northernmost point of Europe, in 2022. Cycling truly is a beautiful way to travel. It's always a challenge and it requires patience. But along the way one gets to see unique places and meet a great many interesting people. There are plenty of routes and destinations I would like to tackle in the future. Have a look at the little video I made of the North Cape trip!

Reading

Next to the everyday academic reading I spend quite a substantial fraction of my free time churning through books of different genres. I most enjoy non-fiction, Sci-Fi and the occasional classic here and there. The big question as to who is my favourite author can be answered straightforwardly: of course it's P.G. Wodehouse. If you have never read any of his masterworks I can recommend starting with Carry on Jeeves. His The Code of the Woosters is the funniest book ever written. Enjoy!
